distributed proportionally to artists other than those they listened to. Specifically,
this favors mainstream artists featured in popular playlists for casual listeners,
while disadvantaging all artists who produce niche, experimental, classical music, jazz and local repertoire.
The widely criticized pro rata system, often labeled as broken, poses a long-term threat to music innovation
by making it increasingly challenging for independent and innovative artists to emerge.
And finally, it would be a good time to question the opacity with which playlists are managed,
the algorithms recommending music to listeners, and the close power ties between major record companies
and streaming platforms aimed at favoring their contracted artists at the expense of others.
